God Never Changes: Finding Confidence in His Faithfulness

It’s hard for some people to trust. Maybe they have been hurt by someone they were told to trust. Maybe they were lied to. Whatever the reason, trust does not come easy for everyone. But we must trust. We all drive over bridges, and we trust that they will support the weight of our car. We trust our boss to be ethical. We trust a driver to stop when they are facing a red light.

But bridges sometimes collapse. And bosses occasionally lie and drivers do run red lights. If trusting means you might be disappointed, that is no better than hoping or wishful thinking. Trusting in something based on our daily experiences doesn’t fill many of us with much confidence. Why would trusting in the Lord be any different? Why would God do what he promises when everyone else falls short?

Because God is different. Look at His attributes, those things that tell us who and what God really is. It’s like looking at an apple tree and knowing what kind of tree it is, not because its name is on a sign under it, but because you recognize the bark, the leaves and see the fruit it bears. People are the same. We hear what they say but it’s what they do that proves who they really are.

God is identifiable and trustworthy because of who He is and what He does. His Word proclaims truth. Look at the evidence.

• “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” (Numbers 23:19, ESV) God is dependable and honest.

• “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (James 1:17, ESV) God is generous and does not change.

• “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.” (Isaiah 40:28, ESV) He is the creator of everything there is, he never gets tired and lives forever.

• “This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.” (Psalm 18:30, ESV) God is perfect and protects those who seek him.

Seek the Lord. In good times and in bad times. Find Him in the love of Jesus, hear Him in the Word, and talk to Him in prayer. God loves those who seek Him. He isn’t hiding from you. He is easy to find. His trust is good. In our world you are used to being disappointed. You are used to retailers overselling. You are used to half-truths. But that is not God. The trust you place in Him will not come back empty. There is comfort in this trusting. There is rest.

Psalm 37 is a wonderful place to find your confidence. It’s a song of praise reminding us of God’s promises and a road map to a growing relationship with God. Trust in the Lord and do good; delight yourself in the Lord; commit your ways to the Lord; be still and wait for the Lord; refrain from anger -these words of encouragement are found in this psalm and written to give you hope and confidence in the one you can place you trust in.  Knock on that door and watch it open!
