Opening Our Eyes to God's Miracles

I was asked by someone recently about miracles. Did I have any miracle experiences that I could share? I do and I shared several I have seen over the years. Some are huge, like the healing of a man going blind, some are more subtle, like opening the Bible, reading a particular scripture, and then seeing that same passage preached on Sunday as if for me alone.

What I have noticed about miracles is that people tend to notice them more when they are in pain and hopeless. Miracles happen all the time, but when we are comfortable, we tend to ignore them, or worse, claim them as our work. Look what I did! We are good at playing god (lower case for sure) when we feel in control and forget that God is the source of our abilities and all we have. We see our success as driven by our own abilities.

What does the Bible have to say about miracles?

We read that God uses miracles to get people’s attention, “You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples” (Psalm 77:14, ESV). God provides miracles to save people, “And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.” (Exodus 14:22, ESV).

He heals illnesses, “Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter, your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.” (Matt 9:22, ESV). 

He introduced His Son to the world as he turned water into wine, “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.” (John 2: 11, ESV).

Where are the miracles in your life? They are there. Start with the obvious, you are breathing air created by God. You have food to eat because of the Lord. You are alive. What other miracles do you see? You are loved and never alone.  Don’t minimize or ignore the small miracles that are everyday miracles.  Don’t claim miracles as your work. Give the Lord credit. There were 10 lepers healed by Jesus in Luke 17, but only one of them turned to Jesus to give thanks and praise. This leper’s faith in Jesus healed far more than just his disease. He was saved, a new creation in Christ. Forgiveness is a miracle. You are offered grace through your faith in Jesus. Open your eyes and see God all around you.  Jesus is a miracle. Fully man and fully God, obedient to His Father. Willing to die on a cross as a sacrifice for all who will acknowledge him and place their faith in Him. He is the Risen Lord, offering miracles to those who call on His name. Don’t let this miracle slip from your grasp. Believe.

I’d suggest we all sit down in a quiet place and make a personal inventory of the miracles in our lives. And as the list grows, take the time to thank the Lord for his grace and love. Share this list with your friends or families and remind them of the generosity of God. If your list has no entries, if you don’t feel that there have been any miracles in your life, I’d suggest you talk to the source of these miracles. God is there and will listen. Talk to someone in your life who knows Jesus. Faith will come, hope can be restored and all of this is found in the greatest miracle of all, love.
